 Notes From The Heart

How Full is Your Bucket for Kids
by Kevin Li

You may be wondering, bucket, what bucket? Well, in this story Felix learns from his grandfather about the invisible bucket above everyone’s head after Felix dipped from his sister’s bucket. This story is mainly about how to make someone else or yourself have a full bucket. Or, even if they have an empty bucket, maybe you should care for them and help them feel better.

The moral of this story is really to fill your own bucket and other people's buckets by helping them. Helping others also fills your bucket because you have a sense of accomplishment and you have the knowledge that you did something good for someone, such as helping someone pick up their stuff or helping someone with work. This story also focuses on the importance of not caring about what other people say and always being a good person, so that you not only fill your own bucket but also fill someone else’s by making him or her feel appreciated. Sometimes helping others doesn't always make them feel appreciated and your bucket stays the same, especially when they act like a boss and make you feel like a servant. This life lesson is a very important one, and with this kid version, kids can learn it at a very early age and be able to teach others in the years to come.

Felix throughout the story learns not only about a bucket but also about how a bucket becomes empty when he feels bad, such as the time when his mom scolded him for dropping his cereal, and how it becomes full when he was appreciated for helping his teacher pick up his stuff. When someone makes fun of Felix's backpack, he feels hurt and his bucket becomes empty. But, if he doesn't care too much about what other people say and just ignore them, then his bucket will not spill water out. He knows that expecting bad things to happen and spreading bad mood to others wouldn’t help him, and therefore he learns to spread good mood which actually makes him feel better.

Things that I have done to make buckets full include helping people with homework, making friends with new people, and cheering people up when they are down because something happened to someone they love. We should all do this to make life better for everyone. This story tells us that we should always help others and there are many ways to do so.
