Founded in late 13th century, Turku is the oldest city in Finland and used to be the political, economic and cultural center of the country, as well as the capital city until 1812. In order to experience the glory of the old days, each summer Turku holds a large Medieval Market in the city center, including a handicrafts market at the historic Old Great Square and various open-air performances and exhibitions.
Hundreds of local professional actors and residents dressed in medieval costumes follow medieval traditions engage in performances and trading activities. Some of them dress as knights perform fights with medieval weapons, while others play music and sing, or sell handicrafts to the tourists. Local residents dressed in medieval costumes enjoy leisure shopping at the market, vividly portraying life in the Mid Ages.
