Zebra-lined Cross Walks Replaced by “Zebraman”

In La Paz, the capital city of Bolivia, you will frequently see people in zebra-striped clothes and helmets.  They work from early morning to late at night, directing traffic, assisting pedestrians in crossing the road, and instructing drivers to follow the traffic rules.

La Paz is a mountain city with narrow and rugged roads, and traffic jams are very common, making directing traffic a difficult task.  All the “Zebramen” receive professional training of special gestures or postures to direct traffic.  They encourage people to yield to one another, and occasionally give warnings to absent-minded pedestrians.

By virtue of their cute appearance and proper traffic direction, even bad-tempered drivers could not help but restrain themselves when facing a Zebraman.  According to local residents, ever since the Zebramen came into existence, traffic on the main thoroughfares of La Pas has been considerably eased.

Because Zebramen wear helmets all the time, it's difficult to see their faces.  Zebramen are all volunteers, some of them having been delinquent juveniles or vagabonds.  By volunteering to be Zebramen, they receive free room and board from the government, and realize their social values at the same time.
