Discussion on the Meaning of Body Rhythm
by Jasmine Wang

I further studied Dalcroze the other day. Although I had studied before, I gradually felt it seemed to be a teaching method that can really develop people’s music potentiality.

I always believe that like words, math and drawing, music is a form of language that originally exists in the universe. Wise people discover and appreciate music and then reproduce or create music.

Vocality, instrumental music, dance and other artistic forms show the cultural meanings of human civilization in different ways. It is a performer that expresses it to make more people feel music from the bottom of their hearts. Body rhythm can be used to express feelings most effectively. Musical sense, that is, feeling of music, is to feel and express music through the body in all directions, which is a real state of learning music.

This time, like many children learning music, a child playing classic guitar was nervous facing the audience. So he unconsciously shrugged his shoulders. He repeated one difficult point of skills. Obviously, he did not perform well as usual. He played guitar by hand but his heart and body did not relax or move with the music, that is to say, his body restricted his skills. As a result, his performance lacked musical qualities. This is a common problem. We frequently ignore the effects of body rhythm in a performance. We memorize music in our minds instead of by our bodies. Dalcroze says to feel power and energy of music by heart, not by instruments. We can find key points in music when feeling it. Then, in order to express the movement, tendency and power of music, we can use body rhythm to push the crops like balls and dance with them. To our surprise, the problem will be neatly solved in this way. What’s more, the problem of vocality and playing the piano will also be solved in the same way. I believe when he plays guitar next time, he will perform better by practicing Dalcroze. It is of great significance for him to have in mind the image of balls moving with music and meanwhile to mobilize his energies by body rhythm.

Be relaxed. Listen carefully. Feel attentively. Everyone needs this kind of spiritual realm in study and work.
