Reflection on Singing Hearts Summer Stage 2019, Changning |
With memories of Seussical still green in our mind, the second Singing Hearts Summer Stage in Changning District has gotten off to a busy start.
We offer two levels of courses this year. The Sunflower Class is working with excerpts from The Greatest Showman. Following the tight five-day schedule of two American teachers, students evolved simple dance moves and single melodic lines into complex routines and harmonies. Physically tense at first, they eventually relaxed and enjoyed the process. While it was a short training period, all the faces onstage on the last day of the program shone with confidence. Such is the magic of music theatre education.
In a matter of three weeks in Shanghai and San Diego, the Starry Sky Class rehearsed and performed the entirety of Beat Bugs. While in the U.S., we took part in the preview of Newsies with a medley highly praised by the American audience. On the final day, our students gave an energetic performance far from home in a mixed cast of 50 Chinese and American actors and actresses. Throughout the day-to-day rehearsal and time spent with their host families, they immersed themselves in local culture, built friendships, and learned the value of gratitude and love.
Summer Stage 2019 was a lesson in musical theatre, an art form that combines music, drama, and dance, and a lesson in character. We found confidence, shared joy, and learned to be communicative, collaborative, and appreciative.
